In a warp-speed world, his shop was an oasis where history came alive. Many of the books I treasure came from him, and when I open them and see his handwriting on the flyleaf, I’m reminded of the conversations we had…

And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.

Luggage

Last night, my Mom, bless her heart, had a plan to get my rear in gear. Seriously, I am not sure why, but I have been pretty paralyzed in regards to tackling my room and beginning the process of packing for New York. I mean the sheer amount of books that are in my room is quite enough to overwhelm almost anyone, not to mention the bags and bags of scarves I have not been able to make myself part with over the years.

All I can say is my Mom is a pro. Twelve years ago when I was moving from N. Little Rock, AR -> Seattle she took pity on me when she walked into my bedroom and I was staring blankly at my closet, overwhelmed and on the verge of tears. Though a lot and I mean A LOT has changed in the past 12 years…including the fact that I am now moving from Seattle -> New York (Brooklyn) there are some things which have remained the same, namely my inability to pack a room. A suitcase = no problemo, I’m a pro. A life altering packing of the room on the other hand, for those kind of situations sometimes it is best to just call in the expert, Mom.

So, last night when I arrived home there was dinner and a mimosa, then the work began in earnest.. almost…but not before Mom showed me a little inspiration from House Beautiful ”Big Style In Small Spaces”.

Moleskine Lists: Moving to New York

24_juanRayos9
Whether you are planning a visit or dreaming of moving to New York.. There are lists to be made. I am trying to get a jump start on mapping out some of the restaurants I would like to visit, bloggers I would love to network with, etc. I am someone who is passionate about getting to know the city I live in (see: Seattle Adventure Map) and I know that New York is a treasure chest. I can’t wait to draw my map and start the hunt.

Currently, I have so many lists in my Moleskine that I think I may need to start a whole new Moleskine just for New York…

There are lists for:

Blogs
Note To Self: Great blogger who is currently moving from Savannah to Connecticut then to New York.
Gothamist : A daily weblog covering New York city’s personalities, news stories, and media
Dean Street Society: A New York stylist who focuses on “creating providence” in the lives of those she styles.

Additions:
LingeredUpon: Alice is an amazing photographer and here adventures are a source of constant inspiration.
Nicole Franzen:  La Buena Vida, the blog of food & lifestyle photographer Nicole Franzen. Based in Brooklyn New York.
Yikes Machine: She is living my dream! Normally based in New York, but currently spending several months in Paris. She has a wonderful post about what to expect when moving to New York.
Door Sixteen: Brooklyn blogger and book designer.
Scouting NY: This guy works as a movie location scout in New York. His job is to stare at the city.

Eats
Five Leaves, Williamsburg: I have heard the ricotta pancakes are delish!
Ovenly, Greenpoint
Hotel Delmano: Rumors.. about their cocktails and cheese.
Addition: “Cheap Eats”
Mission Chinese Food: Good size servings, and .75 from each entree goes to the New York Food Bank.
Gueros Brooklyn: Lots of tacos.
606 R&D:  An edited selection of market items are available for take away including cake donuts, artisan breads, cured meats, local cheeses, sandwiches and salads.
Sticky’s Finger Joint: Gourmet chicken finger restaurant - antibiotic free, hormone free, cruelty free, free range chicken.
